Fiction readers score higher on empathy and social acumen tests than do readers of nonfiction.


Marina Krokovsky explains, in her article in Psychology Today, that reading fiction is a social process. Stories force us to read minds and to empathize with characters who are different from us.


So, don't feel guilty if you prefer romance or detective stories to heavier, non-fiction reading. They are likely to boost your empathy and social savvy, and shift your focus from yourself to others.
